Closed Channel Flow Monitoring

Magnetic, ultrasonic and contacting technologies to measure and totalise flow in full pipes.

At a glance

  • MagneticNo moving parts, for conductive liquids
  • UltrasonicTransit time for clean liquids, Doppler for solids
  • Pressure and contactingDifferential pressure, capacitance, TDR and paddle wheel
  • Supply to calibrationSelection, installation, audits and hire

Measuring flow in a full pipe comes down to choosing the right technology for the liquid, the pipe and the job. There are several to choose from, and each has its strengths.

The options include magnetic and ultrasonic flow meters, pressure transmitters and contacting technologies such as capacitance, TDR (time domain reflectometry) and paddle wheel, to measure and totalise the flow.

EDS has supplied, installed and calibrated all of them. We’d be glad to talk through which one suits your application.

Clamp-on ultrasonic transducers measure flow from outside the pipe, with no cut into the line and nothing in the flow.

The technologies

MagneticMeasures the voltage induced as a conductive liquid moves through a magnetic field. Nothing obstructs the flow and there are no moving parts, but the liquid must be conductive.
Ultrasonic transit timeTimes sound pulses travelling with and against the flow. Suited to clean liquids, and available inline, as insertion meters or clamped on the outside of the pipe.
Ultrasonic DopplerReflects sound from particles and bubbles carried in the liquid, so it suits wastewater, slurries and other liquids with solids.
Pressure transmittersInfer flow from the differential pressure across a restriction, and measure level and head.
Contacting technologiesCapacitance and TDR (time domain reflectometry) sensors measure level, and paddle wheels measure velocity directly. Simple and economical where conditions suit them.

Choosing a meter

Each technology has its pluses and minuses. These are the questions that decide between them.

  • The liquid: its conductivity, and the solids and bubbles it carries
  • The pipe: material, diameter, lining and condition
  • The straight run of pipe available upstream and downstream of the meter
  • Whether the line can be cut, or the meter must clamp on or be hot tapped in service
  • The accuracy required, whether for billing, compliance or operations
  • Power, communications, and the systems the readings must reach

How EDS helps

  • Selection and supply

Advice on the technology that suits the application, and supply from one of Australia’s largest portfolios of monitoring instruments.

  • Installation and commissioning

Installed and commissioned by EDS technicians, and connected to your SCADA or telemetry.

  • Audit and calibration

In situ audits and calibration of closed channel meters already in service.

  • Hire

Short and long term hire for temporary measurement.
