Thermal Infiltration Surveys
Thermistor strings and open channel flow meters used together to pinpoint where groundwater is getting into a sewer.
Flow monitoring shows how much infiltration a catchment has. Temperature shows where it is getting in. Groundwater and surface water usually enter a sewer at a different temperature from the wastewater already in the pipe, so a string of temperature sensors laid along the pipe registers the change at the point of entry.
EDS combines Beadedstream thermistor strings with open channel sewer flow meters. When a crack opens, the sensors nearest it shift while the flow meter records the extra water arriving, so infiltration is located as well as measured.
Temperature studies are not limited to sewers. EDS delivers short to long term temperature studies in water networks and most other atmospheric or pressurised reticulated networks.
Why combine temperature and flow
Typical uses
- Locating the infiltration an I&I study has measured
- Prioritising CCTV inspections and repairs
- Intermittent infiltration that conventional methods miss
- Temperature studies in water and other pressurised networks
How a program runs
From the first call to data you can act on.
- 01
Scope and site selection
Agree what the data has to answer, then choose sites by their hydraulics, not their convenience.
- 02
Install and commission
Trained EDS crews install intrinsically safe instruments, Australia wide, and check every site before it goes live.
- 03
Monitor and validate
Readings arrive over 4G into FlowSense, with continuous QA/QC and alarms when something changes.
- 04
Report and recommend
Validated data and a report that shows where the problems are and what to fix first, or a feed into your model by API.
