Network Thermal Monitoring

Temperature studies that find exactly where water gets into a pipe, in water and wastewater networks alike.

At a glance

  • Up to 750 mBeadedstream cable with up to 125 sensors
  • ± 0.1 °CBetween −10 and 30 °C
  • Pole-to-pole coverageD605 loggers report by Iridium satellite
  • Modbus or JSONThe MLink connects cables to loggers and SCADA

Water getting into a pipe is usually a different temperature from what’s already in it. EDS runs short to long term temperature studies in reticulated networks that use that difference to find exactly where the water gets in. The method works in water and wastewater networks, and in most atmospheric or pressurised networks besides.

Temperature is a growing practice in network assessment because it is accurate, low cost, and pinpoints specific ingress sources.

How it works

A string of sensorsTemperature sensors spaced along a cable and laid in the pipe. Water entering the network is usually a different temperature from what is already in it.
A flow meter alongsideAn open channel flow meter measures the volume the network is carrying at the same time.
Located and measuredWhen a defect lets water in, the sensors nearest it change while the flow meter records the extra water arriving, so the ingress is both located and quantified.

The equipment

  • Beadedstream Digital Temperature Cable

Up to 750 m long with up to 125 sensors, accurate to ± 0.1 °C between −10 and 30 °C. IP68, and rated to 3.5 MPa fluid pressure.

  • Loggers for remote sites

The Beadedstream D605 reports by two-way Iridium satellite with pole-to-pole coverage, with four cable ports for up to 500 sensors.

  • Into your systems

The Beadedstream MLink converts a temperature cable to Modbus or JSON over RS-485 for other loggers and SCADA.
